Lip Flip: The Latest Trend

Fuller, poutier lips are always in style, and while Dermal Fillers (Lip Fillers) are the most popular go-to for this look, not everyone needs fillers to achieve this desired effect. For those seeking subtle results or a less expensive alternative to fillers, a “Lip Flip” could be your solution using a few units of Botox instead.

What is a Lip Flip?

The Lip Flip uses Botox as an alternative to Dermal Fillers for patients who want a more subtle lip enhancement. This is done with just a few quick injections into your cupid’s bow and the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle responsible for puckering).

Botox relaxes the upper part of your lip and causes it to flip outward and roll slightly upward allowing the upper lip to be more visual and appear more voluminous and defined. An added benefit of this procedure is it can also help smooth vertical lines around the lips!

The results can be noticed within a few days of the treatment and the full results are apparent in about a week. Side effects are minimal to none, usually consisting of Minor bruising or swelling at the injection site. This treatment typically lasts 3-4 months.

Botox Lip Flip vs. Dermal Filler

Botox Lip Flip and Dermal Fillers work very differently and can be combined for optimal results.

A Lip Flip is only applied to your upper lip to relax and flip it. This is typically used to modify a gummy smile or for those wanting subtle results with the appearance of more lip volume. The Lip Flip cost is also less than dermal fillers, however, the results are not as long-lasting.

Dermal Fillers can be applied to both the upper and lower lips and physically adds volume with a mix of hyaluronic acid and collagen. The changes can range from subtle to drastic and results can last 9-12 months.

How to know which is right for you?

You’re a candidate for Lip Flip if:

  • Your upper lip becomes invisible when you smile or you want it to appear less gummy

  • You want fuller lips without additional volume

  • You want a temporary treatment (3-4 Months)

  • You want a subtle pout

  • You do not want to use filler

You’re a candidate for Dermal Filler if:

  • You want additional volume in the upper and lower lips

  • You want to improve overall lip shape and symmetry

  • You want longer-lasting results (6-12 months)

How to Prepare for your Lip Flip

For 3 to 4 days before the procedure, you’ll need to avoid alcohol and blood thinners like aspirin, which can make swelling worse.

  • The treatment only takes about 10 minutes

  • Unless you are combining dermal fillers with the botox lip flip, typically we will not numb your lips beforehand. The procedure isn’t very painful and many compare it to a bee sting.

  • Our injector will apply Botox to the desired areas.

Following a lip flip, you’ll be able to resume most daily activities, though your upper lip may feel slightly numb and look swollen. Here are some post-procedure tips:

  • Avoid smoking in the days after the procedure

  • Do not rub or massage your lips as it can cause the Botox to spread

  • Try to sleep on your back for a few days so your lips don’t press against your pillow

The best way to discover which method is right for you is to meet with one of our Bella Luce Board Certified Injectable Specialists. They will analyze your natural lip anatomy, discuss with you your desired outcome, and take into account your personal preferences when deciding whether Botox or a Dermal Filler. Together you can formulate the best approach for your desired effect. In many cases, especially those with thin lips, combining these two techniques can give the best results!
