How Does Botox Work and What Does Botox Do?

It seems like every day we see more and more products promising to turn back the time on our skin. We are constantly looking for a way to look younger, or get rid of wrinkles, and inevitably that conversation always comes back to Botox Injections and other Neurotoxins like Dysport and Xeonim.

Botox has been a hot topic for the past few years, with more and more people getting Botox injections every day. We hear our friends talk about their Botox injections, we see celebrities with Botox, and we even search for pictures to see bad Botox results. In 2016, 6.7 million Botox procedures were completed, an increase of 759 percent since the year 2000.

Because Botox injections have become so popular, we get a lot of questions about how they affect you and how they work. We asked our injectables experts here at Bella Luce Med Spa to answer these questions and some others you might have when considering getting Botox done.

Botox temporarily reduces muscle activity by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. The muscles are what cause crow’s feet and wrinkles around the eyes, frown lines and wrinkles around the mouth, as well as fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead. After the injection the muscles can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and help collagen build up.

Are Botox Injections Safe?

Yes, Botox injections are safe, but only when they are injected by a trained medical practitioner. As with any procedure, there are a few possible side effects including pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site.

Are Botox effects immediately?

Though some people will see Botox results right away, they are not usually immediate. While some people may notice the effects beginning to take place the day of the treatment, it could take up to two weeks after your treatment before you notice results. Botox and other neurotoxins can take any where from a few days to two weeks for the full effects to kick in.

Are Botox and Dysport the same?

Essentially yes, Botox and Dysport are the same. They are both neuromodulators that soften the fine lines and wrinkles on the face. The difference between them is that they are brand names. They are from two different established aesthetics companies.

What is Preventive Botox?

Botox is one of those treatments you think you will not need until you are in your 40’s or older. However, starting Botox in your 20’s and early 30’s can be extremely beneficial. By getting preventive or “preventative Botox” early can decrease the appearance of deep set lines and wrinkles as you age allowing collagen to build up and smooth slow down the aging process.

If you have any other questions or concerns about Botox or Dysport, feel free to schedule a free consultation with Bella Luce Med Spa (405) 486-7450. We would love to visit with you! And don’t forget, the last week of every month Botox $10.50/unit and Dysport is $10/unit.
